About Me
My name is Colleen, and I'm a mathematician and software developer by training but a calligrapher and designer by heart. Even though I'm actually a big math dork, I have a passion for design, lettering, drawing, and watercolor. I live in Columbia, Maryland with my husband Richie, and the cutest dog you'll ever meet, Rory. I love finding ways to make design and production more efficient by using my math + software skills. In my free time you can find me playing softball or golf, training for a half marathon, playing games with my friends, or outside with a good book and an IPA. I can't wait to work with you!
Why After the River?
In 2022, I went on the most incredible trip of my life. I spent 5 days white water rafting on the Snake River in Idaho with my best friends. I hated it and then I loved it and ultimately it changed my outlook on life. I was in awe of and a little jealous of our 5 guides who spend their summers out on the water, navigating the rapids like it's nothing, and hanging out with cool people like us all summer. I was blown away by the beauty of Hells Canyon. I was reminded of how freakin' incredible and fun my friends are.
When I got home I was devastated. I cried for days, and I was in a funk for weeks. I remembered one night on the river, a guide asked me, if I could do anything, what would it be? And the answer was I'd write words. So to pick myself up out of this post river funk, I decided to do something about that. I finally made my calligraphy page public! I made a few more posts, and had my first few clients. Now I have a registered business, a new name, and lots of plans thanks to this incredible experience. I'm so excited to see where After the River takes me.

As much as I love paper goods, I love the earth even more. If you can’t tell by the name of my company, I love to spend time outdoors. I do everything I can in my business to be sustainable and earth-friendly. I use 100% recycled paper for every printed good (unless otherwise requested), I reuse all packaging, and recycle all scraps, signs, and anything reusable back into my business. I love finding a good mirror or frame to convert to a wedding sign at a thrift store!
At After the River, I believe that love is love, and every couple deserves to be treated to the same custom stationery experience! I am excited to work with all clients, and want to create an environment where everyone feels valued, regardless of their gender identity, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, or ability.
